From the moment I received Lucas, he has been an extraordinary dog. I was so proud of him, I took him everywhere, even my childrens' K-12 school. At five months of age, he visited everyone, loved the attention, simply wiggled his ears at the school bells and other loud noises, and would lay on the floor and doze during class breaks. I began to research therapy dogs. After a seemingly long time, Lucas became registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc. of Cheyenne, Wyoming. He now listens to the 3rd and 4th graders in Mrs. Kiefer's class read out loud. They read for 20 minutes each. Reading and petting Lucas is all they have to do, not knowing that petting a dog reduces their blood pressure and the stress of reading out loud is minimized. Words come easier and louder, Lucas doesn't correct or judge, and both student and dog love the interaction. We love it!
Pictured are the majority of the 3rd/4th graders that Lucas listened to this year.
Here are most of the kindergartners that enjoyed reading to Lucas this spring.
